Can someone explain the second one to me? I don’t know Pokemon but I’m curious.

@mbtihatemyself This is Cinnabar Lab, where, according to the lab logs you find, experiments/studies were done on a pregnant Mew, resulting in the birth of Mewtwo, likely in this very chamber.  Since Mew is a mythical Pokémon and the only one in the game is yours (available exclusively through the Pokéball Plus), the implication is that your Mew is the Mew from the lab logs, and you’re essentially bringing Mew back to the place of this traumatic experience.

(Mewtwo’s game origins are different in the games vs the anime–in the anime, Mewtwo was cloned from Mew’s DNA, but in the game, it’s explicitly stated that Mew “gave birth” to Mewtwo)

Do you read fan fictions? If you do, do you have any recommendations?

shine-sprites:

I read them on occasion but I only have three brain cells so I don’t read that many, unfortunately! I also haven’t read a single one for Mario, oops. I can recommend a friend of mine, @rose-of-pollux ! She writes some seriously good stuff – and if anyone else wants to plug their work I’m happy to check it out for you!

Aww, thanks so much for the plug!

I only really have 3 Mario fics–one being a post-Dream Team fic and the other two Smash-verse, but still Mario Bros-centric.  The Dream Team fic is here on my tumblr under the tag the-hero-heart, and the two Smash fics are on AO3.

(All three of these are also cross-posted to ff.net)

That moment when @rose-of-pollux points out that Luigi’s Mansion 3 could be one huge homage to the Super Mario Bros Super Show!

Honestly, I would not mind at all if this ends up happening, or at least being an acknowledgment of the show’s 30th anniversary–this was where we first got to see Mario and Luigi being portrayed as Best Bros who support each other.

What better way to have those call-backs/shout-outs than in a spinoff series which is all about Luigi facing his fears to rescue his bro?

Stop STOP you’re blowing my mind here!

It doesn’t surprise me that Nintendo make these obscure references (Nintendo leaves no stone unturned); but as fun as the Super Show was, I don’t think Nintendo would put it up there as their crowning achievement.

Therefore it surprises me that they seem to be dedicating an entire Luigi game filled with major references that relate back to the show. Plus, is the Super Show even a licensed Nintendo product? I mean yeah it stars official Nintendo characters but has Nintendo officially trademarked it?

That I’m not sure of but if Nintendo are going to have fun with this and stick references in to what is to many a childhood show, I have no problems with it!

I admittedly have no idea about the trademarks, but as I understand it, Nintendo did delegate the airing of the show, so I guess they do “own” it?  I dunno.

And of course, I could be reading way too much into it, and it’s really all just a coincidence/me seeing what I want to see in my nostalgia (yep, I was one of those kids who grew up watching it).  Yep, it is a fun show and memetic at times, and things like Luigi dabbing in the Rabbids crossover or his MK8 Death Stare shows that Nintendo does acknowledge how popular memes can get, so it’s definitely still “Is it…?” territory right now.

But if I’m right and it is a deliberate set of call-backs, then I will absolutely be over the (dark) moon!

OK, so, the bird in the video is not the same bird in the original shaming picture–the original shamed bird is Larry, and the one in the video is Bibi.  So, while Larry’s order is still, alas, a mystery, it has opened up a whole new and interesting thing–

If you watch Bibi’s video in youtube and look in the related videos column, you’ll see videos of other birds playing around with Alexa.  And I actually wasted spent a bit of time watching a lot of these because bird behavior is my jam.

Basically, we now have multiple anecdotes of birds playing around with Alexa.  And while it’s true that most of them are probably just imitating what their humans have said, the fact remains that they are establishing a cause-and-effect association with Alexa.  “If I say this, this human tool will light up and do things.”

Even tiny birds like finches can establish cause-and-effect relationships; the level of thinking that goes on in parrots, which have proportionally larger brains (along with corvids) is incredible.  It’s also noteworthy that a lot of the videos are of African gray parrots, which, through the research of Dr. Irene Pepperberg and @alexfoundation, we know to have the intelligence capability of a preschool human.

And while tool use has always been an indicator of animal intelligence, these birds are learning to utilize a sophisticated piece of human technology–not even fellow apes could use this technology, as they can’t create the same sounds as humans can, and yet these parrots, with brains significantly smaller than apes, are learning and succeeding on account of their ability to reproduce our vocalizations.  If given the chance, I think domesticated corvids could learn, too, and that would be an amazing potential avenue of research for both corvids and parrots, especially as AI becomes more prevalent.

It also gives new things for bird owners to consider–simply put, you don’t want to connect an AI to your home security system and have your bird learn to activate the panic button in the middle of the night…

(Side note, given that one of the most famous smart parrots was named Alex, it just seems right that these birds are playing around with an AI called Alexa).
