AND HERE IT IS. I finally saw âWE HAVE EACH OTHERâ SCENE AND THUS ITâS OFFICIAL! I finished the greatest series I have ever watched in MY LIFE!!!! âThe Deep Six Affairâ is definitely the best way to end the series! (The Seven Wonders of The World/How To Steal The World ends kind of on a downer) so 100% recommend ending the series on this, because it ends with them like this. They have each other, and they always will. đ
Title: A Family Affair Rating: PG Chapter
summary: Napoleon and Illya find the THRUSH connections they were looking for–but also trouble, resulting in their needing an assist from a surprising source.
                       Act IV: Family First
Napoleon waited, wondering what to do as the voices drew
closer towards the washroom. Â Thinking
quickly, he noticed a green bathrobe hanging on the wall, changed out of his
suit, and threw the robe on as they used a passkey to open the washroom door,
just managing to conceal his communicator and his Special in the robe.
âI beg your
pardon!?â Napoleon exclaimed, tightening the robe around him, sounding as
affronted as he possibly could.
Rex stared in utter befuddlement at Napoleon, who glared
right back. Â No one spoke for a moment.
âSir⊠are you sure weâve got the right room?â one of the
flunkies asked, at last, in a very embarrassed tone.
âOf course Iâm sure!â Rex snarled. Â He turned back to Napoleon. Â âWho are you!?â
âI should you be asking you
that!â Napoleon said. Â âJust who do you
think you are, barging in like this!? Â A
man needs his privacy!â
Rex ignored him, and instead reached for the pants that
Napoleon had tossed aside. Â Napoleon
realized that he was looking for identification, but that didnât concern him,
as he was carrying cover IDs.  âŠAt least,
it didnât concern him until he suddenly remembered that he was using âAlbert
Strollerâ as an alias on this assignmentâAlbert being the name his mother had
wanted to give him, and Stroller being her maiden name. Â In any other situation, it wouldnât have been
an issue, but now, in this caseâŠ
âStrollerâŠâ Rex said, staring at the ID.  âAlbert Stroller!?  YouâŠâ
He stared at Napoleon, the realization sinking in as he saw Coraâs
features in his face, as well. Â âHer son!
You are Coraâs son!â
ââŠStrange as it is, Ma never mentioned things like this
happening when she was fortune-hunting in Las Vegas,â Napoleon said, now trying
to charm his way out of a situation he had never expected to deal with. Â âIâm sure sheâll find this interesting; just
give me a moment and I can let her knowâŠâ
He tried to slip past them, only to be forced to stop as
Rex pulled a gun on him. Â He cursed
internally.
âAhâŠ. Look, I realize my name wasnât on the reservation,
but I was in town and decided to spend some quality time with my parentsâIâm a
traveling shoe salesman, you see, so when I found outâŠâ  Napoleon knew it was futile, but playing dumb
was the only way of ensuring that he wouldnât be searchedâand that his
U.N.C.L.E. equipment wouldnât subsequently be found on him.
âShut up,â Rex said, and he turned to a flunky. Â âTake him to a storeroom and lock him in
there with a guard. Â Cora will have to talk with me now that I have her
son as leverageâhold him until I find her.â
As the flunky marched Napoleon away at gunpoint, he had to
marvel at the irony; he had expected Cora to be used as leverage against
himânot the other way around. Â He went
quietly as he was locked in the storeroom, waiting for a few minutes as the
flunky now kept guard outside the door.
He took his communicator out and called Illya.
âHey, Tovarisch,â he said, and then began to speak quietly,
in Russian. Â âDonât let Ma and Dad realize whatâs going on, but my cover name of
Albert Stroller ended up working against me once Rex found out about it.â
Illya groaned, quickly realizing what must have happened.
âWhere are you?â
he asked, also in Russian.
âLocked in a
storeroom downstairs until Rex can find Ma and convince her to meet with him
now that heâs got me where he wants me,â Napoleon replied. Â âHe
doesnât know Iâm with U.N.C.L.E., so itâs just one weakâbut armedâguard
outside. Â I have my Special and could
shoot my way out myself.â
âSo, why donât you?â
Illya asked.
âBecause all I have
on is a bathrobe, and Iâd be rather conspicuous in that. Â I need clothes.â
There was a long pause.
âPlease tell me there
is an explanation,â Illya said, at last.
âThere is, but for
now, letâs simplify it with âit seemed like a good idea at the time,â and Iâll
explain the whole story later,â Napoleon said. Â âLook,
my clothes are in Ma and Dadâs washroom, but Rex is bound to be guarding that,
so forget it. Â Just grab another set of
my clothes from my luggage and get them to me as soon as you can!  âŠAnd make sure Ma and Dad are safe.â
âWith the room in the
name of âDr. Mallard,â they should be fine here. Â Donât worry, Napoleon; I will be there as
soon as I can.â
He signed off, and gave an awkward glance at Cora and
Leopold.
âWhatâs going on?â Cora asked. Â âNapoleon didnât want us to know about
somethingâthatâs why he was speaking Russian, wasnât he?â
âHe doesnât want to worry you unnecessarily,â Illya
said. Â âHe just needs a little bit of
backup, and I will give it to him, as we have done for each other countless
times. Â I must ask the two of you to
remain here until I return.â
He checked his Special, grabbed some clothes from
Napoleonâs suitcase, gave the Solos a reassuring nod, and headed out the door,
locking it behind him.
âI donât like this,â Cora said. Â âSomething went wrong and Napoleon didnât
want us to know about it. Â Why else would
he speak in Russian?â
âThat he was able to call was a good sign,â Leopold
said. Â âIllya will bail him outâyou heard
what he said. Â Theyâve done this before.â
âHe mentioned âAlbert Stroller,ââ Cora went on.
âSomeone from your side of the family?â
âNo, thatâs the thingâthere is no Albert in my side of the
family; that was the name I had wanted to give him before you stepped in with
âNapoleonâ while I was still out of it!â Cora reminded him. Â âNapoleon has always known that! Â And Illya mentioned a âDr. Mallard,â and that
was the name he had given the bellhop.
Theyâre using fake names, Leopoldâand Napoleon used Albert Stroller, not
knowing my connection to Rex before this all started! Â Rex is trying to use Napoleon as leverage
against me! Â After what happened all
those years ago, Rex isnât about to let me get awayâLeopold, our boys are in
serious danger, and itâs my fault!â
ââŠAnd all it would take would be for one of those THRUSH
people to recognize them,â Leopold realized.
He paused as he saw Cora heading for the door. Â âWhat are you doing!?â
âAll this time, Rex thought he was going to have to deal
with an unwilling bride. Â Heâs about to
deal with an angry mother instead.â Â She
glanced back at her husband. Â âAre you
coming, or what?â
ââŠIllya told us to stay here,â he reminded her.  âVery likely under Napoleonâs instructions.â
âAnd they are both very sweet to look after the two of us,
but Mother knows best,â Cora countered. Â âCan you sit idly by while our boys are in
danger because of us?â
Leopold considered this.
âAlright,â he said.
âBut if weâre going to do this, letâs do this the right wayâjust like
the old days.â
Coraâs eyes shined.
âOh, I love the way you think!  âŠIf only you could pick better namesâŠâ
                                             ***************************
Illya soon showed up with a suit of clothes and a
tranquilized guard to free his partner.
âHow does this always seem to happen to you?â Illya
inquired, as Napoleon hurriedly got his clothes on.
âJust my luck, I guess,â he said. Â âOkay; itâs a cinch that Iâve lost the
element of surprise, so Iâll go stay with Ma and Dad and you see if you can
gather the evidence.â
âIâve already got one smoking gunâmetaphorically speaking,â
Illya said, picking up a THRUSH weapon from a box in the stock room. Â âItâs a gun, but it isnât smokingâfortunately
enough.â
Napoleonâs sour expression turned into one of eagerness.
âThatâs it, Tovarisch, weâve got the link! Â We can make our arrest!â
The duo moved to leave the store room, but halted as they
heard Rexâs voice; he was talking to someone.
âThe new weapons shipment came in; itâs down here with a
prisoner Iâve been holding,â he was saying.
âPrisoner?â a familiar, raspy voice replied. Â âYou never mentioned anything about a
prisoner!â
âItâs not a THRUSH prisoner; itâs a personal prisoner;
thereâs no need to concern yourself with this matter, Korbel.â
Napoleon and Illya both exchanged glances.
âAnton KorbelâŠ!â Illya exclaimed, his mind going back to
the case theyâd called The Fiddlesticks Affair, and how Napoleon had nearly
suffocated in Korbelâs vault during the mission. Â âBozhe
moyâŠ!  Napoleon, from now on, we
shouldnât trust THRUSH to finish off their failing members.â
ââŠI think youâve got a point,â Napoleon said, as he pulled
Illya behind a stack of crates. Â âShh.â
They waited, silently as Rex and Korbel approached,
stopping as they noticed the tranquilized guard and ran in.
âHeâs gone!â Rex fumed.
âYour prisoner!?â Korbel asked. Â âWho was he?â
âThe son of someone I was hoping to convince to cooperate
with me,â Rex muttered. Â âHe couldnât
have gone far!â
âAnd heâs been poking around the THRUSH weapons!â Korbel
said, indicating the open box. Â âHeâs no
longer a personal prisoner, RexâTHRUSH is involved now. Â You say heâs the son of someone you were
trying to strong-arm? Â Get the parent,
and make it clear to the son that you demand him to surrender.â
âI donât know where she went,â Rex muttered. Â âThatâs why I had the sonâto get her to surrender!â
âWell, youâd better find at least one of them!â Korbel
snapped. Â âIn the meantime, letâs move
these before anyone else finds them!â
Napoleon and Illya could only cringe as Rex and Korbel
moved away the top boxes of weapons, revealing their hiding place.
âStroller!â Rex exclaimed, as Korbel stared at them in a
mixture of horror and sheer hatred.
âItâs the son!â
âItâs Solo and Kuryakin!â Korbel hissed, venom in his voice
as he drew a gun on them.
âSoloâŠ?â Rex asked.
âSolo, Strollerâsame differenceâŠâ Napoleon said, with a
shrug. Â âWeâll be on our way–â
âTheyâre U.N.C.L.E. agents!â Korbel fumed. Â âAnd you were going after Solo for some
personal reasons? Â I should kill the both
of them right now for what they did to me!â
âWait a minute, wait a minute!â Rex said. Â âDo what you want with Kuryakin; I need Solo
in order to get his mother out of hidingâyouâve heard me mention of Cora
Stroller before, havenât you–?â
âThis is not the
time to try to blackmail your runaway bride from decades ago!â Korbel exclaimed
in disbelief. Â âWe need to interrogate
these two, find out how much U.N.C.L.E. knows about our operations here, and
then eliminate them before they pull some ridiculous plan to ruin the operation
here like they did in my casino four years ago!â
Rex blinked, and then pointed at Napoleon.
âHe gets it from his mother, I can tell you–â
âREX!â Korbel
bellowed. Â He then drew his weapon on
Napoleon and Illya again as they attempted to slink away.
âAlright, Korbel, you go and question them,â Rex said. Â âItâs a cinch that Cora is in their room–â
âNo, she isnât, Boss,â a voice said.
Napoleonâs heart leaped into his throat as he saw his
father being paraded into the stock room at gunpoint by one of Rexâs flunkies,
a hat pulled down over their face.
âDadâŠ!â
âWhere is Cora!?â Rex demanded.
âShe got away; they others are looking for her,â the flunky
said.
Leopold was hastily shoved over to where Napoleon and Illya
were standing.
âNow this has possibilities,â Korbel mused.
âDonât,â Napoleon warned, standing between Korbel and
Leopold. Â âHeâs not a part of this. Â Iâll tell you anything you want.â
âOh, I know you will, SoloâI knew you would as long as we
had your partner with you,â Korbel said.
âWhich makes your old man here completely unnecessary, if you ask me.â
âCompletely
unnecessary!â Rex echoed, sounding almost eager.
âWhatâs in these things?â Rexâs flunky asked, suddenly picking
up Napoleonâs Special from where he and Illya had placed their weapons after
Korbel had drawn on them. Â âThey did a
number on the guard, but he doesnât seem dead.â
âTranquilizers,â Korbel scoffed. Â âU.N.C.L.E. has yet to learn the lesson that
mercy is for the weakâand that efficiency means getting rid of unnecessary
things.â
Korbel pointed his weapon over Napoleonâs shoulder, at
Leopoldâs head.
âNo–!â Napoleon began, but he stopped in surprise as the
flunky pointed his Special at Korbel and fired.
Korbel dropped like a rock, and before Rex could react, he, too, had
been tranquilized.
âWhatâŠ?â Illya asked.
Leopold just shook his head.
âYou couldnât have acted a little more quickly?â
Napoleon and Illya stared as the âflunkyâ now took off the
wide-brimmed fedora hat, revealing Cora beneath it.
ââŠMa!?â Napoleon
asked.  âYouâŠ?  âŠIs that one of my suits?â
âIâve had better fits, but thank goodness you took after me
in the height department and not your father.â
Her expression softened. Â âAnd
thank goodness you boys are going to be alright.â
She rushed forward and hugged Napoleon tightly; though
still trying to process what had just happened, he hugged her back. Â She then let him go and turned to Illya; he
took a moment to come to grips with the fact that this was a genuine maternal
hug. Â This wasnât the first such hug Cora
had given him, and it wouldnât be the last, but it was still an incredible
thing to rememberâthat he had a family again after losing the one heâd been born
into during the horrors of the war.
She let Illya go now and kissed her husband as they two of
them began to tie up their prisoners.
âAnd who is this miserable thing?â Cora asked, looking at
Korbel.
âAn old foe of ours, Ma,â Napoleon said. Â âWe made things a bit embarrassing for him
four years ago.â
âWe only embarrassed him,â Illya said, darkly. Â âHe
tried to asphyxiate you in his vault, remember, Napoleon?â
ââŠHe what?â Cora
asked, her voice going dangerously cold.
Napoleon now scrambled to retrieve Korbelâs real gun as
Cora began to search for it.
Leopold shook his head.
ââŠSheâs talked about applying to U.N.C.L.E. part-time to
handle interrogations,â he informed Illya.
âIâve been talking her out of it.â
Illya smirked, clearly relishing the thought of Cora
demanding answers from those who had dared attack her son.
âWhile I doubt Mr. Waverly would hire her⊠next time, try
not to talk her out of it,â Illya requested.
Leopoldâs eyebrows arched for a moment as he glanced at
Illya, and then looked back at his wife and son; Napoleon was trying to stop
his mother from following through on a kick she had aimed at the unconscious
Korbel.
Leopold then just chuckled and clapped Illya on the back.
âI think two family members in this business are more than
enough,â he said.
And Illya went slightly red, for Leopold had just confirmed
what Coraâs hug had told him earlierâ
This was his family now, and they would be together for
another day with this mission now complete.
And Illya was grateful for it.
